Tri-County Speedway opened the 2026 racing season on Saturday night March 21st. The weather was great, the crowd was great, and the car count was great. I guess you could say it was a great night for both race fans and all the race car drivers!!
The first race of the night was the Outlaw Division. It appeared as though the drivers were a little rusty from the winter break. There were plenty of cautions and crashed cars during this event. Pole sitter for the race was Sheflon Clay, #15. His lap time was 15.736, 91.509 mph. The first caution was waved on lap 40. Zach Franks, #51, and Jonah Cullen, #1X, were involved in a crash coming out of turn 2. Lap 42 saw caution #2. This involved the cars of Chuckie Duncan, #C1, Trey Epps, #55, and Cullen once more. The final caution was 3 laps later on lap 45. Dakota Seagle, #13, and Clay spun in turn 2 while battling for the lead. From this point, it was a race to the finish with David Messer, #25, claiming the win. He was followed by Clay in second and Robert Thomason, #95, rolled home third.
Race #2 was the Renegade Division. Klint Townsend claimed the pole with a lap time of 18.598, 77.427 mph. This race was caution free. Townsend brought his #9 car home for the win. Nathan Pate, #1, ran second. Marlin Gunter, #91, placed third.
The Limited Late Model Division rolled off as the 3rd race of the night. Walter Jenkins IV, #1J, locked down the pole position with a lap time of 15.846, 90.874 mph. Konner Leicht, #2, spun out on the backstretch and started smoking badly. This brought out caution #1 on lap 22. Caution #2 was on lap 30. Three cars were involved in this yellow flag. The cars of Madison Green, #95, Landon Lassiter, #10, and Leicht hit the bottom and top walls in turn 2. A lengthy red flag was displayed to clean up the carnage. Once racing resumed, Jenkins went on to claim the victory. Chase Pollard, #98, was second and Owen Wilson, #42, was third.
The Street Stock Division was the 4th race. Terrence Tucker was fastest in qualifying with a lap time of 17.137, 84.028 mph. No yellows were waved during the event. Gary Ledbetter, #8, got by Tucker for the win. Tucker was relegated to second. Mike Hatton, #12, was third.
Race 5 was the Late Model Division. Qualifying was tight. A minuscule 220 seconds was all that separated the top qualifier from the slowest. Graham Hollar, #25H, had a fast lap of 15.609, 92.254 mph. Yellow #1 waved on lap 40 when Cameron Bolin, #67, spun in turn 2. It seemed as though something broke on the car causing the spin. Caution #2 was on lap 59. This was the result of Alex Meggs, #18, and Billy Snodgrass, #99, having an altercation and spun on the front stretch. Near the end of the race there was a battle between Justin Carroll, #57, and Landon Huffman, #75. Carroll came home the victor. He was followed by Huffman in second and Thomas Beane, #01, was third.
The 6th race of the night was the Carolina Mini Stocks. A lap time of 17.660 was fast enough for Jamison Whittington to claim the pole. Dennis Trivette, #28, brought out the only caution on lap 12. It was the result of a spin in turn 4. After racing resumed Robert Trivette, #11, claimed the first win of the season. He was followed in second by Terry Torrence, #50. Austin Shumate, #41, placed third in this division.
The Tri-County Vintage Series was slated to race next. Jonathan Fleming, #6, had the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 16.538, 87.072 mph. Only 2 cars showed up for this class. Tim York, #27, had the misfortune of breaking down before the race. Therefore, Fleming was declared the winner and York second.
The Crown Vic Series took to the track next. James Powell, #32, had the fast time in qualifying, with a lap time of 20.283, 70.995 mph. The race ran caution free. Dominic Morlando, #013, took the lead from Powell and never looked back for the win. Powell finished second and TJ Gibson, #06, rolled home third.
The Front Wheel Drive Division was the final race of the night. Skylar Brown, #2, was pole sitter with a time of 19.287,74.661 mph. Jesse Slagle, #31, spun in the 4th turn on lap 20 for the sole caution of the race. Brown finished exactly where the #2 car started which was P1. Gary Willard, #54, rolled home second and Drew Porter, #62, was third.
Tri-County Speedway loss one of their own this week. Skip Moser passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 25th. He was the General Manager of Tri-County Speedway as well as part of the advertising team. He will be greatly missed. Please remember to keep his family in your prayers.
