Why We Race
Next up on our “Why We Race” series is Jarrett Anderson.
“I would say that getting introduced to racing at a young age and being around it for a good amount of time is to blame. Being named after 1961 & 1965 Grand National Champion Ned Jarrett may have started the trend.
Being around my dad and hearing the stories about how he started his career in racing helping out Ernie Cline, which turned into helping Cecil Gordon while he was still in high school, and being fortunate enough to experience being a part of teams like Roger Pitts who won the won a Limited Late Model Championship, and Marty Houston winning Rookie of the year, and a Limited Late Model Championship. It was also cool to be able to go to school and tell your friends that you saw your dad on TV during pit stops when he helped Jimmy Spencer in the Busch Series too.
You always hear everyone say that it's the smell of the fuel, the roar of the engines, the cheers and even the boos from the crowd, and just getting to spend time around your racing family is what does it and what keeps us coming back. I would have to say that is the most accurate answer that anyone could come up with. It's truly a home away from home and really hard to imagine life without it. Racing is a constant progression, a constant push to be better, faster, and improve skills.
We as drivers have to learn from every experience, both successes and failures. Not only is it a physical battle, but it’s just as much mental if not worse. As a driver, you are making split-second decisions, focusing, having the right mindset for motivation and confidence, and the ability to manage their emotions and handle pressure are all things that are going through our minds lap after lap, corner after corner, yet no matter what problems we are having in the real world, as soon as we crawl through that window, our minds are clear from it all.
As funny as it may sound, there is truly a special bond between driver and machine. It doesn’t matter if it’s a completely stock style car, or a brand new Cup car. If you take pride in what you do you will find that bond. Racing teaches life lessons as well. Perseverance, goal setting, adversity, and teamwork.
There’s a lot more to it than just getting in and holding the loud pedal and turning left. Think about it, even Stroker Ace had a mean streak two feet wide and hauling shine was the regular line until THE TRACK got in his blood.
In all seriousness though, once it does get into your blood it truly becomes a way of life and something that everyone should experience if they are serious enough to take it serious.”
